How to bring “smart drains” into your veterinary construction project

If you’re embarking on a new veterinary hospital construction project… or a major renovation… you know how important it is to consider every little detail for an ideal workflow and a clean, sanitary, patient-friendly environment.

So here’s a question for you. Have you thought about your floor drains yet?

Most building designers or contractors assume there’s one kind of drain: small and standard; not ideal for avoiding clogs from pet hair, waste and other animal-care materials.

Make sure you take a look at the large kennel drains our TriStar Vet engineers have designed for use in any veterinary treatment room or kennel. We like to refer to them as “smart drains.” Find out why.

During our many visits with veterinary practices over the years, we kept running into a common problem that we wanted to help solve. Practices were always telling us about the frustration of clogged drains due mainly to contractors using smaller, standard-grade drains that can’t handle pet materials.

The problem was basically this: smaller drains couldn’t handle the frequent water flow of cleanup after procedures or in washing down kennel areas. The drains were constantly becoming clogged with all the “stuff” that comes with pet care: pet food, hair, residual solids, cloth from toys/bedding, etc. TriStar Vet blog: Configured to connect with a larger drainpipe, our veterinary drains allow for large, quick drainage while also catching anything that ends up on the floor

Our engineers developed larger drains made to fit into the concrete anywhere in the clinic — anywhere you’re working with animals and washing materials off the floor.

Here’s why we call them “smart drains” for your practice:

  • Configured to connect with a larger drainpipe, our large drains allow for quick drainage while also catching anything that ends up on the floor
  • This is because our drains are actually complete systems with a catch basin, catch/strainer basket and catch screen
  • This system makes it easy for you and your team to clean out the strainer basket in one simple step to make sure nothing clogs the drain

They’re the best drains to use specifically in kennels as well as treatment areas, isolation rooms, dental suites, surgery rooms and grooming areas. You can put them in individual kennel rooms, with individual drains for each unit.TriStar Vet blog: Configured to connect with a larger drainpipe, our veterinary drains allow for large, quick drainage while also catching anything that ends up on the floor

Imagine how smart you’ll be by installing these kennel drains in your new facilities or major renovation.
